In early 2016 that Firefighters Dan Hamel, Derek Friars and Craig Long discussed the notion of the Sussex Fire Department having an Honour Guard. FF Hamel made a presentation to the Chief Officers who were receptive to the idea. A consultation was held with members of the Saint John Honour Guard to seek advise and tips as to how we should proceed. Firefighter Doug Trentowsky and Mark Carey from Saint John Fire gave tips as to uniforms, ceremonial tools and drill that would be required.

With the information in hand the idea was brought before the entire membership and a majority of members agreed to form an Honour Guard. With the valuable assistance of the #2859 Col John Saunders Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and FF Adam Constantine of Saint John Fire Honour Guard (Former member of our Dept.) the initial 7 members began drill training in early 2017. Sussex Fire Chief Harold Lowe was formerly involved with the Fort McMurrary FD Honour Guard and was also instrumental in developing the policy and procedures and with some of our drills.

The Sussex Fire Honour Guard attended their first event on Nov. 11, 2017 for Remembrance Day. Members set up at the entrance of the Irving Saunders Memorial Chapel at Kingswood University as an Honour Guard for the event.

As of today the seven members are all active members of the Sussex Fire Department and continue to drill monthly. The Honour Guard is available for Department ceremonies, parades and for funerals of current and past members of the Fire Department. In future it is hoped to be able to expand to 11 members and to continue to represent the Sussex Fire Department with Pride and Honour.
