Advisory to residents of the Town of Sussex and surrounding areas that there has been a significant rise in river levels in the area. The Town of Sussex Works Department and Emergency Measures Coordinator are continuing to monitor the situation. Residents in low lying areas should take all necessary steps to secure your home and property. Some steps to prepare for flooding include:
Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours (visit www.getprepared.gc.ca for suggestions for your 72 hour kit)
Turn off basement furnaces and the outside gas valve.
Evacuate house pets to a safe, pet friendly area.
Move furniture, electrical appliances and other belongings to floors above ground level.
Remove toxic substances such as pesticides and insecticides from the flood area to prevent pollution.
If possible, remove toilet bowls and plug basement sewer drains and toilet connections with a wooden stopper.
Listen to your local radio stations or TV networks to stay informed.
Gather important belongings, prescriptions, emergency items, radios, and a change of clothes and put in a easily portable bag in case of an evacuation
Ensure that your cell-phone is charged.
Contact family members and advise them about where you will be if evacuated.
Shut off main power breaker or lower levels if at all possible.
Secure loose outdoor items and furniture.
Relocate vehicles, snow blowers and other equipment that may be damaged by water
