The Government of Canada establishes Firefighters’ National Memorial Day

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale announced Firefighters’ National Memorial Day in Regina on Friday.

The day will serve as a tribute to public safety officers who have died in the line of duty and will fall on the second Sunday of September each year.

In 2017, the day will fall on Sept. 10, and flags will be at half-mast at all federal properties.

CVFSA President Graham Pawlett, said “Having this day to remember firefighters for the work they do and for the sacrifices that have been made is a real tribute to the Canadian fire service. A special thanks needs to be extended to the Canadian Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation and their president Bob Kirkpatrick for the work they have put into getting this day recognized. Troy Mutch and I are honoured to have been included in the announcement as we proudly represent the volunteer firefighters of Canada.”

According to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation, over 1,300 firefighters died in the line of duty since 1848.
